Dear White Mountains Regional School District Community,
As winter weather returns to our beautiful region, I want to take a moment to share the considerations and processes involved in determining a two-hour delay or cancellation of school due to inclement weather. We understand the importance of ensuring the safety of our students, staff, and families while balancing the need to provide consistent learning opportunities. Our district covers a diverse geographical area with five distinct communities with varying elevations and weather patterns. This can result in significantly different road conditions across the district. For instance, while one area may experience light snowfall or clear skies, another might face icy roads or heavy snow accumulation. These variations require us to assess conditions across all district parts carefully.
Safety is always our top priority, and several factors go into our decision-making process:
1. Early Road Assessments: Starting as early as 3:00 a.m., district personnel and local highway crews evaluate road conditions firsthand. Their observations are critical in determining whether the roads are safe for buses, student drivers, and staff traveling from surrounding areas.
2. Consultations with Local Agencies: We work closely with town road agents, law enforcement, and weather services to gather the most accurate and up-to-date information about current and projected conditions.
3. Student Drivers and Staff Commutes: With many high school students driving themselves to school and staff commuting from significant distances, the safety of all travelers is a primary concern. Some of our staff members travel upwards of an hour to reach school, navigating various conditions.
4. Geographical Challenges: The unique terrain and differences in elevation throughout our district often create weather patterns that vary widely over short distances. A safe driveway in one town might lead to treacherous conditions just a few miles away.
Despite our best efforts to make timely decisions based on all available data, we recognize that weather conditions can change rapidly. We strive to notify families by 6:00 am to allow time for planning while ensuring that our decision is well-informed and prioritizes the safety of everyone in our school community. We ask for your understanding and patience as we navigate these decisions throughout the winter season. We know these delays and cancellations impact families, and we do not take these choices lightly. If conditions at your location remain concerning after a decision is made, we encourage you to exercise your discretion in keeping your child home for their safety.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation in keeping our students, staff, and community safe during the winter months.
Warm regards,
Robert Scott
Assistant Superintendent
